Star Trek

Boldly Go Where No One Has Gone Before!

I have a friend that is gaga over anything to do with Star Trek. He has been watching since it aired in the mid 1960’s and short of having his ears done like Spock he is all about the characters and story lines of the cult classic.

He recites lines from the show during dinner “Bones! Pass the ribs!” He sits in traffic muttering “I’m giving her all she’s got Captain!” Just before football games on TV he is heard to say, “Gentlemen set your Phasers on destroy!” In short, he has become an extension of Ray Bradbury’s imagination, and William Shatner’s choppy acting style all in one.

Just the other day he looked at me, spread his fingers apart and spoke in majestic Spock-like tones- “John, Live Long and Prosper!” Just as I was about to counter with a Klingon death grip a thought crossed my mind.

Mr. Spock was the first alien televised motivational speaker!

This explains everything!

Surely a thirty something Wayne Dyer was watching and heard from on high! A young Les Brown and an even younger Philippe Matthews were tearing up the house when Spock froze them in their collective tracks with his pronouncement!

Think about it- before Star Trek the best material came from Bishop Fulton Sheen on Sunday mornings or on radio with Earl Nightingale. But Kirk, Spock, Bones, Mr. Sulu, Scotty and Lt.Uhurua were the ones delivering the real deal. Get aload of these early inspirational gems!

“A little suffering is good for the soul” Capt. Kirk, Stardate 1514.0

“People must learn before they can reach for the stars” Capt. Kirk, Stardate 3259.0

“The brain is what all life is about!” Dr. McCoy, (unknown Stardate)

“Change is the essential process of all life” Mr. Spock, Stardate 5730.2

“He’s dead Jim.” Dr. McCoy, Stardate 3196.1

Ok maybe the last one doesn’t fit the get moving category but Bones sure said it a lot.

What does all this mean? Simple! The messages we need to remind and renew are not limited to books, tapes, and seminars. They can find you anywhere. Sitting in traffic or sitting on top of a mountain its all about awareness and willingness. It’s remembering that it’s the message that counts not the messenger that delivers it. So find your TV Guide and check your local listings for that long lost gem of life changing, cheesy, over acted space (inner) exploration- Star Trek- and boldly go where you have never gone before-

In the words of another motivational TV pioneer-“Nanoo-Nanoo” It means “It works if you work it” according Mork from Ork.
